Internet marketing is classically defined as creating sales and/or gathering leads and information from potential customers that are surfing the Internet.
Traditionally, this has meant endeavoring to get your website into search engine rankings like Google, Yahoo, Bing (formerly MSN) and others so that it shows up when a potential customer of yours types in a “keyword phrase” that your site ranks for. There are specialists and consultants that make their living working with companies to try and get their sites on the first page of Google’s search engine results for the keywords that everyone thinks will generate sales and leads. This consulting service is known as search engine optimization or SEO.
As things have developed over the years internet marketing has expanded to include pay per click advertising. These are ads (during a Google search, these ads show up on the right hand side of the page and sometimes at the top) that are written by advertisers to be shwn when certain keywords or phrases are searched. How this works is that when a person clicks on the ad, they are sent to the advertiser’s website, and the advertiser is then charged for that “click”. This is Google's business model that nets them billions of dallars each year.
Another avenue that is recieving attention are social networking sites like Facebook. Here, in many cases the most efficient advertising will be “viral” and more “virtual word of mouth”. The most effective types of targeting for these advertising vehicles will be demographic targeting rather than keyword targeting. This is much more complex than search engine optimization and pay per click advertising, but can also be much more profitable if you have a hit in this arena!
